Overhead bin space is a touchy subject, especially if you don’t like to check your bags. It feels like this should be something so easy, but the process causes stress for many.

The last thing you want to hear is, “this is going to be a full flight so we are checking bags at the gate” or worse, “all of the overhead bins are full.” This immediately brings on travel stress for those in the final boarding groups.

How to deal with it?

Move valuables to smaller bag

Anything you can’t live without, transfer the items to a smaller handbag that can go under your seat. These are items like valuables, keys, medication and your phone charger.

The last thing you want to deal with is the airline losing your luggage, that you had no intention of checking, and you accidentally left your medication in the now checked bag.

In case you don’t have a second smaller bag, always keep a tote bag in your carry on. That way if situations like this happen, you have a plan B.

Avoid Hard Carry-on Cases or Roller Bags

Pack a soft carry-on bag opposed to a hard carry-on case or roller bag. If there is limited space in the overhead bins, you can potentially squeeze a softer bag into an available space. This gives you a fighting chance.

Pack Light

If your bag looks heavy and you’re in the final boarding groups, you will most likely get flagged as someone who needs to check their luggage. Don’t push the weight and height restrictions for luggage. Instead, only pack what you need on the plane.

Any Space Will Do

There is no rule that you have to use the overhead bin above your seat.

If you know overhead bin space is already limited, keep your eyes open for an available spot. Also, don’t second-guess yourself because best believe that person behind you is also eyeing the overhead bins too.

In Case of Emergency

Last advice is to pack an extra set of underwear in your smaller handbag. I don’t know about you, but I like to avoid opening my carry-on at the airport. It’s always best to be prepared with extra underwear in case your bag doesn’t make the flight.

Ok, now you’re set to survive dealing with the stress of overhead bins.

Safe travels!!!
