Where to Travel October 2018

As we say goodbye to September and hello to October, I’m always a little sad.

September is my birthday month and one of my favorite months to travel. The weather is still warm in most destinations and high season prices dramatically drop. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t great places to travel in October.

October is known for being one of the best times to experience an African safari, but it also means destinations like Kenya and Botswana will be busy. If fewer crowds are important to you, then traveling to cities in Europe is a must this month.

I recommending skipping travel to many popular spots in Asia as many of these destinations are known to have heavy rain in October. The Caribbean is also a hit or miss region as it’s hurricane season. That doesn’t mean you can’t travel to the Caribbean in October. If you do decide to go, make sure to get travel insurance.

Curacao

Located under the hurricane belt, this island known for its colorful buildings is an ideal tropical destination when traveling in October.

Greece Islands

By October, the Greek islands have cooled down from the scorching hot summers making it an ideal location for strolling the labyrinth-like streets of Mykonos and Santorini. If you’re feeling adventurous skip Mykonos and Santorini and explore less known Greek islands like Corfu or Kefalonia.

Perugia, Italy

When I lived in Italy, Fall was one of my favorite times of the year. Like Vermont and Maryland, there are some great places to experience the fall foliage. Two places I highly recommend to travel in October is Perugia and Lucca. Perugia, a hilltop city located in Umbria, is simply gorgeous in the Fall. Known for its chocolate and wine, Perugia is a great city to stroll the streets admiring the views on your way to another wine tasting. What else is there not to love?

While hurricane season is coming to an end, that also means cruise lines are dumping shiploads of tourist is places like Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Cabo San Lucas is located on the west coast of Mexico makes it an ideal travel location for October. The downside is that October also is peak season so it’s best to book your travel a few months in advance to get the best deals.
