Outside of Venice, Rome, and Florence, the Amalfi coast is probably one of the most recognizable places in Italy and rightfully so. Known for its breathtaking views, picturesque towns and hairpin turns, the Amalfi coast is a great destination for a romantic getaway or relaxing vacation with friends.

The best way to visit this scenic coast is to fly to Naples, rent a car and drive down to Sorrento. Driving in Italy is not as bad as you think. Make sure to obtain an International Driving Permit before leaving the States. Also beware of the autovelax, a box on the side of the road with a camera to catch people speeding.

Positano

Drive in the direction of Positano from Sorrento. Before you arrive in Positano make a pitstop at Positano Belvedere, a viewpoint that allows you to get Instagram worthy pictures of the town of Positano in the distance.

When you arrive in Positano, take a stroll around the charming town that was once a small fishing village. Nowadays it’s a popular destination for celebrities and the international crowds who fancy Positano’s luxury 5-star hotels.

Vettica Maggiore and Priano

After exploring the life of the rich and possibly famous in Positano, continue to the twin medieval villages of Vettica Maggiore and Priano. Make sure to stop by the church of San Gennaro with its gorgeous tiled dome with colored majolica. The views from the church square are worth the trip alone.

Emerald Grotto

As you continue on your way towards Amalfi, a visit to the Emerald Grotto (Grotta dello Smeraldo) is a must. This grotto received its name for the stunning colors that occur when the sun bounces off of the Tyrrhenian Sea into this underground cave. The only way to get to the emerald colored cave is by boat. Plan to arrive in the early afternoon to enjoy the best light possible, though boats start tours as early as 9:30 am.

Ravello

From here, continue to the town of Ravello. Like many of the villages in this area, Ravello also has unforgettable views and is a major tourist destination. In Ravello, you will see whitewashed houses perched on the hills with gardens planted with vines, and lemon and olive trees.

Last but not least, no trip to this area is complete without tasting some of the region’s wines. The Amalfi coast is rich in volcanic soil making it ideal for growing grapes vines, surprisingly this area is not known internationally for its wine. However, they are just as good as more popular Italian varieties and should not be missed to complete a memorable trip to this picturesque region in Italy.
