[title maintitle=”” subtitle=”The Part of Puerto Rico No One Knows “]
I am crazy in love with Puerto Rico to the point that I’ve considered buying property on the island. Note that I never saw myself owning property anywhere until I spent time on the west coast of Puerto Rico, also known as the Porta del Sol region.
Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot to love about San Juan, which is where most people visit when traveling to Puerto Rico.
San Juan is a beautiful and lively city rich in history and culture. Heck even my favorite restaurant on the island for mofongo, Cafe Puerto Rico, is in San Juan. So I’ll never stop going. But, nor will all the other thousands of tourist I’d be joining in San Juan at the same time.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m trying to unwind and relax, I don’t want to be in a crowded space unless I’m at the club.
However, once I discovered cities like Isabela and Cabo Rojo in the Porta del Sol region, I never had to worry about fighting for a peaceful space on the beach in Puerto Rico.
Book a Getaway: Unplug and Be Free in Puerto Rico – November 9-12, 2017
If you’re daring enough to go rogue and check out the non-tourist areas of Puerto Rico, here are some of my favorite spots on the west coast of the island:
Playa Sucia
Repeatedly voted one of the top 25 beaches in the Caribbean, this beach is a perfect destination for nature lovers. Located in Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge, this beach is known for its crystal blue water, hidden caves and scenic hiking trails that lead to the Cabo Rojo lighthouse.
Ice Skating in the Tropics
I don’t know too many places where you can be in a bathing suit one minute and then skating on ice, but it’s possible in Aguadilla. What a fun way to cool down after a hot day in the sun.
San German
Considered the Old San Juan of the west, San German is the second oldest city in Puerto Rico. Enjoy the cities Spanish Colonial architecture as you stroll down the historic streets.
La Parguera Cays and Bioluminescent Bay
One of three locations in Puerto Rico where you can swim or kayak at night while organisms naturally turn the bay into a glow-in-the-dark water experience. This is not to be missed!
Guajataca Tunnel
Located between Isabela and Quebradillas, this historic former railroad tunnel is the gateway to one of the most scenic views in Puerto Rico. Walk through the tunnel to get to a picturesque Oceanside trail with amazing views that leads to another beach in Isabela great for a romantic pit stop.
There are so many fantastic things to do on the west side of Puerto Rico, which is why it’s one of my favorite areas to visit.
In case you missed our Facebook announcement or email earlier this week, registration for our Unplug and Be Free in Puerto Rico trip is now open.
Think of this trip as travel therapy as it is an opportunity to focus on your well being while enjoying the enchanting beaches of Puerto Rico. It’s also a perfect long weekend getaway from the winter blues for those East Coasters.
Space is limited as no one wants to be in a large crowd when they are trying to get their zen on. So grab your spot today by submitting your deposit. Payment plans are also available.
